All About High Health Aquaculture
Located in Kailua-Kona Hawaii, HHA's bio-secure breeding center and broodstock production facility is situated in the Aquaculture Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA).
World Class Research at HHA:
HHA's high level of science has been recognized by top U.S. government agencies. No other shrimp breeding or broodstock production company has garnered as much prestige as HHA.
Over the years, HHA has been awarded a total of 9 U.S. Federal Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR) and matching State of Hawaii SBIR Phase 1 and Phase 2 grants totaling over USD $1,000,000 in government sponsored R&D funding.
SBIR Research Projects:
- Development of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Penaeus monodon for High Health and High Performance. Phase 1 and Phase 2. Granting Agency: United States Department of Commerce (USDOC) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 1995-1998.
- Hybridization of Marine Shrimp for Superior Commercial Performance. Granting Agency: United States Department of Commerce (USDOC) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 1998.
- Development of SPR (Taura-resistant) Shrimp for Improved Performance. Gramtimg Agency: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR) , 1998.
- Aplying Biotechnology to Develop Virus-resistant Shrimp. Granting Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 1999.
- Development of White Spot Resistant Shrimp for Improved Performance. Granting Agency: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 2000.
- Developing Polyploid P. monodon for Improved Performance. Granting Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 2001.
- Developing Polyploid P. vannamei for Improved Performance. Granting Agency: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 2002-2003.
- Selective Breeding Marine Shrimp for Low Salinity Culture. Granting Agency: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Small Business Innovative Research Program (SBIR), 2004.
Oversight and review by SBIR Agencies assures that the highest level of science is practiced and that results are interpreted in an unbiased manner.

HHA's State of the Art Breeding Center:
HHA's SPF biosecure breeding center is designed to run sophisticated breeding programs. Equipped with the latest tank, photo period and recirculating filtration systems, HHA is capable of producing 24 distinct families per run.
Our Breeding Center produces broodstock throughout the year and is carefully timed to meet peak demand during the critical months, the high seasons for farm pond stocking. The ability to internally produce large quantities of SPF juveniles allows HHA to select only the fastest growing and healthiest for broodstock production.
